About Great Western

Close to the centre of Newquay, it is a popular beach that is easily accessible but tends to be less crowded than its neighbours Towan Beach and Tolcarne Beach.

TR7 2NE - See the overview for Newquay for access and parking details. It can be easily reached from the main shopping centre along East Street and Cliff Road as far as the Great Western Hotel (some 500m) where there is an access road that goes out to Tolcarne Point and down to the beach. The slipway access makes it suitable for pram, pushchairs, wheelchairs and the disabled.

At high tide it is a relatively small beach with often little or no sand, although in summer there is usually a larger area. As the tide goes out a wide bay appears with a wonderful expanse of flat golden sand with Killacourt Cove on the westerly side. At low water it is possible to walk on the sand to Towan Beach past Killacourt Cove and also Tolcarne Beach.

There is safety/rescue equipment above the beach. RNLI Lifeguards are on duty from the end of May until the end of September. There is also a first aid post.

Details are shown in the overview for Newquay.

Dogs are permitted all year.

There are toilets adjacent to the beach including facilities for the disabled. There are fewer facilities than the other Newquay beaches but there is a cafe, beach shop, watersports equipment hire, deck chair hire and showers.
